Hurricane Ike
It's been a crazy weekend! Hurricane Ike made landfall late Friday night and destroyed most of Galveston Island as well as several parts of Houston. Jason and I prepared all day Thursday for the imminent storm. We filled up anything that could hold water with tap water and froze water in tupperware around the clock so we would have additional ice and ice water. We also dropped the A/C to 60 degrees so we could get the house as cold as possible before we lost power. Our work paid off. We lost power at 2 am but stayed comfortable all night and well into the next day. We were able to save most of the food in our fridge and freezer from stuffing bags of ice and frozen jugs of water in them.
The devestation in our neighborhood is what you would expect with hours of 80 mile an hours winds and rain. The worst of the winds came around 5 am. It sounded like a tornado and train heading full speed towards the house on several occasions! Our house also got pelted with acorns and pecans making it seem like we were under fire most of the night.
By 8 am the streets were flooded, but luckily not our house, and there were trees and limbs down everywhere! Jason's parents stayed in Friendswood and had little damage to the house, but also had lots of debris and broken trees and limbs. Chad and Renee lost several shingles on their roof (most of the houses in Richmond and Katy had severe roof damage) and their fence in the backyard was torn down. Really we are fortunate to have our house and cars in tact. Luckily most of our friends and family made it through OK. Some are still without power though. We are praying that power is restored for these families soon!
There are still several parts of Houston that are still under water and still without power. I have been looking through pictures submitted to our local newspapers and news stations and am amazed at the devastation out there. Please keep the city of Houston in your prayers!

It is not easy getting around Houston right now. Several roads are either flooded or blocked by debris. Plus after 8 pm the city is very dark in most places! Tomorrow we will be volunteering at the church to help clean up. It is going to be long few weeks!
